Projecting Future Scenarios for Fidalgo Bay (All day)

Projecting Future Scenarios for Fidalgo Bay - Modeling Water Circulation and Coastal Changes

Dr. Eric Grossman, Research Geologist, U.S. Geological Survey

“Dr. Grossman will discuss how the US Geological Survey is using powerful 3D computer modeling to examine coastal processes and inform ecosystem restoration and hazard mitigation in the Salish Sea.  How might climate change, sea level rise and land use influence coastal communities, ecosystem restoration outcomes, and Fidalgo Bay? Learn how USGS is constructing a 3D hydrodynamic model of Fidalgo Bay as part of a larger Salish Sea model to study these questions. Citizen science can help USGS and its partners improve these models through research and monitoring – find out how you can get involved as a volunteer!”

2018 Lecture Series: Hummingbirds (Fri. 16 Feb, 2018 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm)

The Californians are Coming: Recent Shifts in Range and Abundance of Northwestern Hummingbirds

Presented by CJ Battey

From the mid-1970’s to the early 2000’s the Anna’s hummingbird (Calypte anna) went from rare vagrant to ubiquitous year-round resident across the Puget Sound lowlands. Over the same period the migratory Rufous hummingbird has colonized a new wintering range on the US Gulf Coast, some thousand miles northeast of its traditional wintering habitat in central Mexico. In this talk I will explore the history of range shifts and changes in abundance in these speceis on both evolutionary and human timescales, and discuss why we have observed such dramatic change in such a short period of time.

C.W. Battey is a Ph.D Candidate with the University of Washington's Department of Biology and Burke Museum of Natural History, Seattle, WA.

Presentations are free and open to everyone. Donations—always welcome—support Friends’ ongoing efforts to provide outstanding educational programming for our community. Hope to see you there!
